Looking to add soft, cooling color to your shady spaces? Torenia Summer Wave Amethyst is just the ticket. With velvety purple blooms and a trailing habit, this beauty brings an elegant wave of color to hanging baskets, window boxes, and shady garden beds. It’s a reliable favorite for our Southern summers—thriving where others fade and filling the air with grace and cheer.
Plant History:
Often called the “Wishbone Flower,” torenia has been a favorite in Southern gardens for decades, especially where shade-loving, colorful blooms are hard to come by. The Summer Wave series is a newer hybrid, bred for heat tolerance and nonstop blooms—even during our steamy Georgia summers.
What It Signifies:
Torenia symbolizes serenity, charm, and quiet strength. The soft purple hues of Amethyst speak to calm hearts and gentle spirits—just the kind of peace we all long for in our little corners of home.
Maximum Height:
Reaches 6–10 inches tall with a spreading or trailing habit of up to 18–24 inches wide—perfect for containers, hanging baskets, or as a trailing edge in shaded beds.
Bloom Time:
Blooms continuously from late spring through early fall, even during the hottest months. No deadheading needed!
Where It Grows Best:
Loves part shade to full shade and well-drained soil. Ideal for porches, under trees, or along the shaded sides of the house.
Care Instructions:
-
Keep soil consistently moist, especially in containers—torenia doesn’t like to dry out.
-
Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
-
No need to deadhead—this variety is self-cleaning.
-
Trim lightly if it starts to sprawl too much.
Complimentary Plants:
Pair with Impatiens, Caladiums, or Ferns for a peaceful shade garden. It also looks lovely spilling over the sides of a pot with Coleus, or mixed with Begonias for a classic Southern porch planter full of soft, welcoming color.
