Citrus Lemon ‘Ponderosa’ Bush | 10” Pot
A Big-Hearted Beauty with Southern Soul and Sunshine in Every Leaf

At Wrights Market, nestled in our cozy 1938 cottage where the scent of biscuits mingles with fresh-cut herbs and stories are shared over sweet tea, we love plants that feel like family. The Ponderosa Lemon Bush is one of those plants—bright, bold, and deeply rooted in history and hospitality.

A hybrid believed to be a natural cross between a lemon and a citron, the Ponderosa Lemon first appeared in the late 1800s and quickly earned a reputation for producing extra-large, flavorful lemons—some as big as grapefruits! While not the daintiest of citrus, it’s certainly one of the most generous, offering beautiful blooms and fragrant fruit that fill a space with joy.

With glossy green leaves, creamy white flowers, and a compact shape perfect for containers, this citrus bush fits right into porch corners, sunrooms, or backyard gardens. The blossoms are delightfully fragrant, and the lemons, while tart, are full of flavor and old-fashioned charm.

In the language of plants, citrus represents abundance, vitality, and cheer, reminding us of the richness of life when it’s tended with love.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Loves full sun—at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily

  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy; let the top inch dry between waterings

  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate humidity; mist during dry spells or winter heat

  • Soil: Well-draining potting mix, ideally made for citrus or mixed with sand/perlite

  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a citrus-specific fertilizer

  • Blooming & Fruiting: Fragrant white blooms in spring and summer; fruit ripens over several months

  • Cold Sensitivity: Best kept indoors or protected during frost—move to a sunlit window when temps dip

Perfect Companion Plants:

  • Lavender or Rosemary Topiary – offers structure and scent, and thrives in similar light

  • Lemon Button Fern – softens the look around the base with delicate, rich green fronds

  • Hoya ‘Krimson Queen’ – trails beautifully around citrus, with a sweet contrast in texture

  • Succulents (Aloe or Echeveria) – low water companions that add charm and ease

Whether it’s soaking up sunshine on a patio or tucked into a kitchen corner, the Ponderosa Lemon Bush brings generosity, light, and the kind of goodness that grows with care. From our family at Wrights Market to yours, we hope it inspires you to slow down, savor the moment, and share something sweet.
