Evolvulus glomeratus ‘Blue Daze’

Add a soft wash of true blue color to sunny Southern landscapes with Blue Evolvulus, commonly known as Blue Daze. This low-growing, spreading plant is prized for its silvery-green foliage and small sky-blue flowers that open throughout the warm season.

It is especially beautiful spilling over the edges of containers, softening the front of flower beds, cascading over walls, or massed as a colorful groundcover.

Why We Love Blue Evolvulus

Blue is one of the hardest flower colors to find in the landscape, and Blue Evolvulus gives you a soft, natural blue that pairs beautifully with white, yellow, pink, purple, and fresh green foliage.

Its low habit makes it especially useful for the front of a planting bed where taller shrubs need something softer around their base.

Sunlight Requirements

Blue Evolvulus performs best in:

Full sun

For the strongest flowering, provide approximately 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day.

Plants grown in too much shade may become looser and produce fewer flowers.

Wright’s Market Recommendation

In southeast Georgia, give Blue Evolvulus plenty of sun.

It handles our heat well when properly watered during establishment and performs especially beautifully in sunny beds, containers, and around pool areas.

Watering

Immediately After Planting

Water deeply after planting so the root ball and surrounding soil are thoroughly moist.

First Growing Season

Water approximately 1–2 times per week, adjusting for rainfall, heat, and soil conditions.

During extreme summer heat, container-grown plants may need more frequent watering.

Once Established

Blue Evolvulus becomes fairly drought tolerant once established.

Allow the soil surface to begin drying slightly between waterings rather than keeping the plant constantly wet.

Avoid saturated soil.

Fertilization

Fertilize in spring as active growth begins.

Use a balanced, slow-release landscape or flowering-plant fertilizer according to package directions.

A light feeding during summer may help maintain strong flowering in containers or heavily planted beds.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.

Planting Instructions

  1. Water the plant thoroughly before planting.
  2. Choose a location with full sun and good drainage.
  3. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball.
  4. Carefully remove the plant from its 3-gallon container.
  5. Loosen any tightly circling roots.
  6. Position the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  7. Backfill using the existing soil.
  8. Water thoroughly after planting.
  9. Apply a light layer of mulch around the root zone.
  10. Keep mulch away from the crown of the plant.

Soil

Blue Evolvulus performs best in:

Well-drained soil
Average to moderately fertile garden soil
Slightly acidic to neutral conditions

Excellent drainage is important.

Avoid low areas where water remains standing after rain.

Pruning & Maintenance

Blue Evolvulus is relatively low maintenance.

Trim lightly as needed to:

  • Keep plants compact
  • Control spread
  • Encourage fresh growth
  • Remove leggy stems
  • Keep growth out of walkways

If plants become thin or stretched during summer, a light trim can encourage a fresh flush of growth and flowers.

Does Blue Evolvulus Flower?

Yes — flowering is its main feature.

Blue Evolvulus produces small, funnel-shaped flowers in shades of clear sky blue.

Bloom Season

In southeast Georgia, flowering typically begins in late spring and can continue through:

Summer
Early fall
and often until cooler weather arrives.

The flowers usually open in bright daylight and may close during cloudy weather or later in the day.

Evergreen or Deciduous?

In warm, frost-free climates, Blue Evolvulus can remain evergreen or semi-evergreen.

In Zone 8b/9a, cold weather can cause:

  • Leaf damage
  • Partial dieback
  • Complete top dieback after a hard freeze

Plants may return from the roots following mild winters, but this can vary from year to year.

Zone 9 / Coastal Georgia Performance

Blue Evolvulus performs very well during the warm season in southeast Georgia.

It thrives in:

  • Heat
  • Full sun
  • Humidity
  • Well-drained soils

In Zone 9a, winter survival can depend on the severity of the cold and the planting location.

Wright’s Market Recommendation

Treat it as a tender perennial in our area.

Plant it in a sunny, well-drained location and protect the root zone with mulch going into winter if you hope for return growth the following spring.

Landscape Uses

Blue Evolvulus is excellent for:

  • Front-of-bed plantings
  • Groundcover
  • Containers
  • Hanging baskets
  • Window boxes
  • Retaining walls
  • Pool landscapes
  • Rock gardens
  • Sunny borders
  • Mass plantings
  • Spilling over raised beds

Its low, spreading habit makes it especially useful for softening harder landscape edges.

Spacing

Allow approximately 2–3 feet of mature spread.

For a continuous mass of color, plants may be spaced closer together so they fill in more quickly.

Wright’s Market Tip

Blue Evolvulus looks best when allowed to spill and spread naturally rather than being kept in a tight, clipped shape.

Use it where its soft edges can become part of the design.

Wright’s Market Designer Combination

Try:

Blue Evolvulus + white flowering plants + chartreuse Carex + dark green evergreen shrubs

The blue flowers bring softness and color while the evergreens provide permanent structure behind them.

Why Wright’s Market Loves It

We love Blue Evolvulus because it gives Southern landscapes something truly special: real blue flower color.

It is:

Long blooming
Heat tolerant
Low growing
Beautiful in containers
Excellent along bed edges
Easy to combine with other colors
Relatively low maintenance

It is one of our favorite choices for adding a soft blue accent without making a landscape feel overly busy.

Wright’s Market Plant Tip

For the heaviest flowering, give Blue Evolvulus plenty of sun and excellent drainage.

Too much shade or constantly wet soil will reduce performance.

Please note: Plant height, spread, bloom quantity, and winter survival vary depending on season, weather, and growing conditions. A 3-gallon Blue Evolvulus is a young landscape plant and will continue spreading and filling out after planting.
