Bird of Paradise – A Tropical Classic
With its bold, fan-like foliage and vibrant blooms that resemble a bird in mid-flight, the Bird of Paradise brings a bit of paradise home—right to your porch, sunroom, or garden path. Native to South Africa and cherished for centuries, this plant earned its name from Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a patron of botany, and has since been a favorite in stately gardens and cozy corners alike.
Where It Grows Best
The Bird of Paradise thrives in bright, indirect light—perfect for a sunny window indoors or a partially shaded patio outdoors in warmer months. In zones 9–11, it can flourish year-round in the ground, but in cooler climates, it’s happiest in a container you can bring inside when the air turns crisp.
Care Instructions
-
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight
-
Water: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry; loves consistent moisture but not soggy roots
-
Feeding: A balanced fertilizer once a month during spring and summer encourages lush growth and blooms
-
Tip: Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth now and then to keep them glossy and dust-free
With its tropical elegance and strong, structured leaves, the Bird of Paradise adds a touch of faraway beauty and warm-weather charm—just the kind of plant that makes you want to linger a little longer on the porch swing or pen a letter in the sun.
