Arborvitae ‘Green Giant’
A gentle giant for privacy, peace, and Southern grace

At Wrights Market, tucked inside our little 1938 cottage, we know the value of a little privacy, a lot of beauty, and the peace that comes from watching something grow strong and steady. The ‘Green Giant’ Arborvitae brings all of that and more to your landscape—growing tall, proud, and quietly dependable, just like the folks who’ve tilled the soil here for generations.

A hybrid of Thuja plicata (Western Redcedar) and Thuja standishii (Japanese Arborvitae), ‘Green Giant’ was introduced to American gardens by the U.S. National Arboretum. Since then, it’s earned its reputation as one of the most resilient and fastest-growing evergreen trees available—ideal for Southern living where screens, windbreaks, and year-round greenery are cherished.

Where it grows best:
Best suited for USDA zones 5–9, ‘Green Giant’ thrives in our Southern soils and sunshine. It loves full sun to partial shade, and it grows vigorously in moist, well-drained soil—often shooting up 3 feet per year once established. Mature height reaches 30–50 feet, with a broad, pyramidal form about 12–15 feet wide. Perfect for long property lines, lining a driveway, or giving your backyard a cozy, private feel.

What it means:
Arborvitae, or “tree of life,” has long symbolized protection, longevity, and peace—a reminder that strong roots and steady growth lead to lasting beauty. ‘Green Giant’ brings those values to life in a way that feels right at home in the South, where we value shade trees and good neighbors in equal measure.

Bloom time:
While not known for flowers, this gentle giant stays green year-round with soft, scale-like foliage in rich emerald tones. Its consistent color and full shape add structure and life to the garden no matter the season.

Care instructions:

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade

  • Soil: Tolerates many soils but prefers moist, well-drained locations

  • Water: Regular watering during the first year; drought-tolerant once established

  • Pruning: Rarely needed—naturally uniform in shape. Can be trimmed for formal hedges if desired

Disease- and deer-resistant, ‘Green Giant’ is as low-maintenance as it is high-impact—a true Southern workhorse with a touch of elegance.

Pairs beautifully with:
Let this bold evergreen stand tall behind softer companions like limelight hydrangeas, butterfly bushes, or roses. Add boxwood or azaleas at its feet, and tuck in seasonal touches like caladiums, lamb’s ear, or autumn ferns for color and texture. It’s the perfect green backdrop to highlight your favorite blooms all year long.
