Why We Love Rose Creek

Rose Creek is one of those shrubs that works almost anywhere in a Southern landscape.

It stays relatively compact, produces flowers for months, and does not require constant pruning to look good.

The foliage also changes throughout the year. New spring growth can have a soft pink cast, mature foliage becomes glossy dark green, and cooler weather can bring attractive purple-green tones.

It gives you interest even when the plant is between blooms.

Sunlight Requirements

Rose Creek performs beautifully in:

Full sun to part shade

For the best flowering and densest growth, provide approximately 6 hours or more of sunlight when possible.

It will tolerate partial shade, but plants receiving more sunlight generally produce heavier flowering.

Wright’s Market Recommendation

In southeast Georgia, Rose Creek performs beautifully in full sun when properly watered during establishment.

It is also excellent in locations with:

Morning sun + afternoon shade

This makes it very versatile for foundation beds and mixed landscapes.

Watering

Immediately After Planting

Water deeply after planting so the entire root ball and surrounding soil are thoroughly moistened.

First Growing Season

Water approximately 1–2 times per week, adjusting for:

  • Rainfall
  • Temperature
  • Soil type
  • Sun exposure

During periods of extreme summer heat, newly planted 3-gallon shrubs may require additional watering.

Once Established

Rose Creek becomes very drought tolerant once established.

Water deeply during extended dry periods rather than providing frequent shallow watering.

Avoid keeping the soil constantly saturated.

Fertilization

Fertilize in early spring as new growth begins.

Use a balanced, slow-release shrub fertilizer according to package directions.

A second light feeding may be applied during the growing season if the plant shows weak growth or pale foliage.

Avoid excessive fertilizer. Too much nitrogen can produce excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Planting Instructions

  1. Water the plant thoroughly before planting.
  2. Choose a location with full sun to part shade.
  3. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper.
  4. Carefully remove the plant from its 3-gallon container.
  5. Gently loosen tightly circling roots.
  6. Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
  7. Backfill using the existing soil.
  8. Water deeply to settle the soil.
  9. Apply approximately 1–2 inches of mulch or pine straw.
  10. Keep mulch pulled slightly away from the main stems.

Soil

Rose Creek is adaptable to a wide range of soils, including:

Clay
Loam
Sandy soils

For best performance, provide moist, well-drained soil. It tolerates slightly acidic to neutral soil and becomes quite adaptable after establishment.

Pruning & Maintenance

Rose Creek is considered low maintenance.

Because it blooms on new wood, it is forgiving when it comes to pruning.

Best Time to Prune

In late winter or early spring:

  • Remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Lightly shape the plant if needed.
  • Thin older stems if the center becomes overly dense.

Rose Creek generally looks best when allowed to maintain its naturally soft, mounded shape rather than being repeatedly sheared into a tight ball.

Does Rose Creek Abelia Flower?

Yes — and it has an exceptionally long flowering season.

Clusters of small, tubular, lightly fragrant white flowers typically begin appearing in May and can continue until frost.

This long bloom period makes Rose Creek an excellent plant for homeowners who want months of flowers without constantly replacing annuals.

Pollinator Friendly

Yes.

Rose Creek attracts:

Butterflies
Hummingbirds
Bees and other pollinators

Its long flowering season also means it provides a nectar source over an extended part of the growing season.

Evergreen or Deciduous?

In warmer Southern climates, Rose Creek is generally evergreen to semi-evergreen.

In Zone 9, it often keeps much of its foliage through winter.

During unusually cold weather, some foliage may drop or discolor. In colder climates, it can become more deciduous or even die back before returning from the roots.

Zone 9 / Coastal Georgia Performance

Rose Creek is an excellent choice for southeast Georgia.

NC State lists it through Zone 9b, and the cultivar was developed by the University of Georgia, making it particularly well suited to Southern growing conditions.

It handles:

  • Southern heat
  • Humidity
  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Drought once established
  • A variety of soils

For a newly planted 3-gallon shrub, consistent watering during the first growing season is the most important step toward long-term success.

Deer Resistance

Rose Creek has good deer resistance and is listed as particularly resistant to deer damage.

No landscape plant is completely deer-proof, but Rose Creek is a strong choice for areas where browsing is a concern.

Landscape Uses

Rose Creek is excellent for:

  • Foundation plantings
  • Low flowering hedges
  • Mass plantings
  • Borders
  • Pollinator gardens
  • Slopes
  • Entry beds
  • Mixed shrub borders
  • Cottage gardens
  • Southern traditional landscapes
  • Containers

Its compact mature size makes it particularly useful beneath windows and along the front or middle layer of landscape beds.

Spacing

Allow approximately 3–5 feet of mature width.

For individual specimens, give each plant enough space to develop its natural rounded form.

For a continuous flowering hedge, plants may be spaced somewhat closer depending on how quickly you want them to fill together.

Wright’s Market Plant Tip

One of the best things about Rose Creek is its May-to-frost bloom season.

Plant it in good sunlight, avoid overpruning, and let its natural mounded shape develop. You'll get months of flowers with very little maintenance.

Please note: Plant height, width, fullness, foliage color and bloom quantity vary by season and growing conditions. A 3-gallon Rose Creek Abelia is a young landscape plant and will continue developing toward its mature size after planting.
