Add rich color and eye-catching texture to shaded spaces with a beautiful Rex Begonia. Grown primarily for its dramatic foliage, this plant features uniquely patterned leaves in shades of green, silver, burgundy, pink, and purple. Each plant has its own distinctive markings, making Rex Begonias a stunning choice for porches, patios, containers, and indoor displays.
Why You’ll Love It
Rex Begonias provide bold color without relying on flowers. Their decorative foliage instantly adds interest to mixed containers and shaded garden areas. They are also compact, easy to display, and beautiful indoors when provided with the proper light and humidity.
Sunlight
Place in bright, indirect light or partial shade. Outdoors, protect the plant from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Indoors, place it near a bright window without allowing strong direct sunlight to shine directly onto the foliage.
Watering
Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain from the container.
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, but never soggy. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water, as Rex Begonias are sensitive to root rot. Try to water near the base of the plant and keep the leaves as dry as possible.
Fertilizing
Feed during the active growing season in spring and summer using a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Fertilize approximately once every 4 to 6 weeks.
Reduce or stop fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows. Avoid overfertilizing, as too much fertilizer may damage the roots and foliage.
Planting and Care
Plant in a lightweight, well-draining potting mix. Rex Begonias prefer warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. Protect outdoor plants from temperatures below approximately 55°F and bring them indoors before cold weather arrives.
Remove damaged or faded leaves as needed to keep the plant looking tidy. Good airflow around the foliage will also help maintain plant health.
Companion Plants
Rex Begonias pair beautifully with other shade-loving plants, including:
- Ferns
- Caladiums
- Coleus
- Impatiens
- Torenia
- Sweet potato vine
- Creeping Jenny
- Heuchera
- Ivy
- Hostas
Use Rex Begonias as the colorful focal point in a shaded container and surround them with trailing or finely textured plants for a full, layered arrangement.
Please note: Foliage colors and patterns may vary naturally from plant to plant.
