Garden Heritage & Charm

Podocarpus has long been appreciated in ornamental gardens for its handsome evergreen foliage and suitability for shaping. A classic cone silhouette brings balance and gentle formality to Southern entrances and cottage-inspired courtyards.

How to Care for Your Podocarpus Cone

Sunlight: Place outdoors in full sun to partial shade. Allow light to reach all sides for balanced growth.

Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots establish. Allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Check containers frequently during hot weather, and never leave the pot sitting in collected water.

Soil & Drainage: Use fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. For containers, choose a quality outdoor potting mix and a planter with drainage holes. Avoid consistently wet roots.

Pruning: Lightly trim new growth in spring and summer to maintain the cone. Keep the base slightly wider than the top so lower branches receive sunlight. Hand pruners help preserve the appearance of the leaves.

Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid excessive feeding.

Container Care: Repot as roots fill the container. Protect from severe freezes; winter hardiness depends on the exact species or cultivar, and container roots are more exposed to cold.

Mulching: For landscape plantings, add a light layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.

Pet Toxicity & Safety

Keep away from pets that chew plants. Common landscape Podocarpus, including Podocarpus macrophyllus, is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten and may cause vomiting and diarrhea. Until “Meta” is botanically identified, treat this plant as potentially toxic.

Remove fallen seeds and pruning clippings promptly. If your pet eats any part of the plant, contact your veterinarian for guidance.

Beautiful Garden Companions

Pair with white flowering azaleas, variegated carex, or dwarf abelia in nearby beds with suitable light and drainage. White snapdragons add seasonal charm in sunnier spots. Leave space around the cone for airflow and trimming.

Each topiary is naturally unique. Height, width, and fullness will vary. The 7-gallon designation refers to the nursery container size.

Timeless greenery and a heartfelt welcome—from Wright’s Market.
