Garden Heritage & Charm

Native to parts of eastern Asia, Podocarpus has long been valued for its handsome foliage and suitability for clipped garden forms. Its globe silhouette brings balance and quiet elegance to Southern courtyards, cottage gardens, and welcoming entrances.

How to Care for Your Podocarpus Globe

Light: Place outdoors in full sun to partial shade. Provide good light on all sides for even foliage growth.

Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots establish. Allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Check containers frequently in hot weather, and empty any collected water from saucers.

Soil: Choose fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. For planters, use a quality outdoor potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Avoid soggy roots.

Pruning: Lightly trim new growth in spring and summer to preserve the globe shape. Hand pruners help avoid cutting across the long leaves. Shape gradually rather than removing large amounts of foliage at once.

Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid overfeeding.

Container Care: Repot as roots fill the container. Protect the root ball during unusually severe freezes and continue checking moisture during winter.

Mulching: In landscape beds, apply a light layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.

Pet Toxicity & Safety

Podocarpus is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten. Ingestion may cause vomiting and diarrhea. Keep pets from chewing the plant, and promptly remove fallen seeds and pruning clippings.

If your pet eats any part of the plant, contact your veterinarian for guidance. Keep seeds away from young children.

Beautiful Garden Companions

Pair with white Encore azaleas, variegated carex, or dwarf abelia in nearby plantings with suitable light and drainage. Add white snapdragons in sunnier spots for cool-season charm. Leave space around the globe for airflow and trimming.

Each topiary is naturally unique. Height, globe diameter, and fullness will vary. The #7 designation refers to the nursery container class, not the plant’s height.

A little garden elegance and a heartfelt welcome—from Wright’s Market.
