Plant History & Garden Charm
Leyland cypress originated as a hybrid between Monterey cypress and Nootka cypress. Traditionally grown for evergreen screening, it also lends itself to carefully maintained topiary forms. Its lasting greenery brings a sense of continuity and welcome through the seasons.
How to Care for Your Patio Globe
Sunlight: Place outdoors in a sunny location with good air circulation. Avoid crowded corners where foliage stays damp.
Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots establish. For containers, check moisture frequently and water when the upper soil begins to dry. Allow excess water to drain completely. Avoid both prolonged dryness and soggy roots.
Soil & Drainage: Choose well-drained garden soil or a quality outdoor potting mix. Decorative planters must have drainage holes.
Pruning: Lightly trim new green growth during the growing season to preserve the globe shape. Avoid cutting into bare, brown wood, which generally will not fill back in. Prune when foliage is dry and use clean tools.
Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreens in spring according to package directions. Avoid excessive feeding that encourages more growth than you can maintain.
Container Care: Repot as roots fill the container. A 5-gallon nursery pot is a starting container rather than a permanent home for this vigorous grower.
Seasonal Care: Keep outdoors with suitable winter protection for container roots during severe freezes. Water at the soil level to help keep foliage dry.
Pet Safety & Handling
Leyland cypress can cause skin irritation or an allergic skin reaction, including in dogs. It should not be considered a confirmed pet-safe plant. Keep pets from chewing foliage or stems, and clear away pruning clippings.
Wear gloves when trimming. If your pet eats the plant or develops skin irritation, drooling, vomiting, or other symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
Beautiful Garden Companions
Surround nearby sunny beds with white snapdragons for cool-season color, or pair with low-growing flowers and ornamental grasses. Leave enough space around the topiary for airflow and easy shaping.
Each topiary is naturally unique. Overall height, globe diameter, and fullness will vary. The 5-gallon designation refers to the nursery container size.
Timeless greenery and a warm welcome—from Wright’s Market.
