Plant History & Garden Charm

Grey Owl is commonly classified as a cultivar of eastern redcedar, a species native to eastern North America. Naturally broad and spreading, it takes on a more tailored appearance when maintained as a globe—a beautiful meeting of relaxed cottage texture and traditional garden structure.

How to Care for Your Grey Owl Globe

Sunlight: Place outdoors in full sun with good air circulation. Give the entire globe room to receive light evenly.

Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots establish. Allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Check container-grown plants frequently during hot weather, and let excess water drain completely. Avoid consistently wet roots.

Soil & Drainage: Choose well-drained garden soil or a quality outdoor potting mix. Decorative containers must have drainage holes.

Pruning: Lightly trim new green growth in spring and early summer to maintain the rounded shape. Frequent, gentle shaping works better than hard pruning. Avoid cutting into bare, older wood, which generally does not fill back in readily.

Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid excessive feeding.

Container Care: Repot as roots fill the container. Adequate root space and consistent moisture checks help keep the topiary healthy. Protect container roots during unusually severe freezes.

Mulching: In landscape beds, add a light layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the plant’s base.

Pet Safety & Handling

Grey Owl Juniper should not be considered confirmed pet-safe. Junipers other than common juniper are listed as potentially harmful if eaten and may cause skin irritation. Pet-specific information for this cultivar is limited.

Keep cats and dogs from chewing foliage, stems, or berry-like cones, and remove pruning clippings promptly. If your pet ingests the plant or develops symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Wear gloves when trimming if you have sensitive skin.

Beautiful Garden Companions

Pair with white snapdragons, salvia, or drift roses in nearby sunny, well-drained plantings. Dark green shrubs provide a lovely contrast to its silvery foliage. Leave room around the globe for airflow and easy shaping.

Each topiary is naturally unique. Height, globe diameter, and fullness will vary. The 7-gallon designation refers to the nursery container size.

A little garden elegance and a heartfelt welcome—from Wright’s Market.
