Boxwood ‘Renaissance’ (Better Boxwood® Series)
A timeless classic, reimagined for strength and Southern grace

At Wrights Market, we believe the best things in life are rooted in history, nurtured with care, and built to last—just like our 1938 cottage and the community that gathers around it. Boxwood ‘Renaissance’, from the Better Boxwood® series, is a beautiful tribute to that way of life—blending old-world elegance with modern resilience.

This cultivar was bred in Europe as part of a groundbreaking effort to bring boxwoods back to gardens without the worry. As its name suggests, ‘Renaissance’ is a revival—a new beginning for the beloved boxwood, offering improved blight resistance and strong, healthy growth.

With its tight, upright habit and deep green evergreen foliage, this variety brings structure, form, and timeless beauty to garden beds, borders, and formal designs.

Where it grows best:
‘Renaissance’ thrives in USDA zones 5–9, perfectly suited for life in the South. It prefers full sun to part shade and grows in moist, well-drained soil. Reaching approximately 3–4 feet tall and wide, it forms a dense, naturally rounded to upright shape—ideal for low hedges, foundation plantings, or adding a bit of Southern polish to cottage pathways.

What it means:
Boxwoods have long symbolized order, endurance, and quiet strength—the kind of beauty that doesn’t shout, but stays steady through every season. ‘Renaissance’ reminds us that there’s beauty in both preservation and renewal—just like a family recipe passed down and lovingly updated for a new generation.

Bloom time:
This evergreen shrub produces small, pale green flowers in early spring, not showy, but pleasantly fragrant and beloved by pollinators. Its real beauty, however, lies in the fine-textured, glossy green foliage that holds its color beautifully all year long—even through winter.

Care instructions:

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; tolerant of various types if not soggy

  • Water: Water regularly during the first season; drought-tolerant once established

  • Pruning: Minimal; prune after spring flush to shape if desired

  • Extra benefits: Highly blight-resistant, deer-resistant, and easy to maintain

‘Renaissance’ is a low-maintenance shrub that brings a sense of refinement and rootedness to any garden—perfect for those who value heritage but live fully in the present.

Pairs beautifully with:
Complement its structured form with flowering favorites like hydrangeas, azaleas, or peonies. For year-round texture, pair with hellebores, ferns, or coral bells. In more formal gardens, combine with holly, camellias, or even crepe myrtles for that classic Southern landscape feel.
