Plant History & Garden Charm

Blue Point is a cultivar of Chinese juniper, a species native to eastern Asia and long valued in ornamental gardens. Its cool foliage color and tailored appearance bring beautiful structure to both traditional Southern landscapes and cottage-inspired spaces.

How to Care for Your Blue Point Patio Tree

Sunlight: Choose a sunny outdoor location with good air circulation. Plenty of sunlight encourages dense foliage and helps maintain its attractive color.

Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots establish. Allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Established landscape plants tolerate some drought, but container-grown trees need frequent moisture checks, especially during summer.

Soil & Drainage: Plant in well-drained soil. For containers, use a quality outdoor potting mix and a planter with drainage holes. Avoid soggy roots and standing water.

Pruning: Lightly trim new green growth in spring or early summer to maintain the crown’s shape. Remove unwanted shoots along the trunk to preserve its patio-tree form. Avoid cutting into bare, older wood, which generally does not regrow readily.

Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid overfeeding.

Container Care: Repot into a larger container as roots fill the current pot. Provide adequate root space and protect container roots during unusually severe freezes.

Mulching: In landscape beds, add a light layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.

Pet Safety & Handling

Keep out of reach of pets that chew plants. Junipers other than common juniper are listed as potentially harmful if eaten and may cause skin irritation. Specific information for Blue Point exposure in cats and dogs is limited, so it should not be labeled pet-safe.

Prevent pets from eating foliage, stems, or berry-like cones, and remove pruning clippings promptly. Contact your veterinarian if your pet ingests the plant or develops symptoms. Wear gloves when pruning if you have sensitive skin.

Beautiful Garden Companions

Pair with white snapdragons for cool-season color, low-growing abelia for contrasting foliage, or ornamental grasses for soft movement. Keep companion plants clear of the trunk and allow room for airflow.

Each patio tree is naturally unique. Height, trunk shape, and crown fullness will vary. The 5-gallon designation refers to the nursery container size.

A little garden elegance and a warm welcome home—from Wright’s Market.
