Plant History & Garden Charm
A cultivar of Chinese juniper, Blue Point comes from a species native to eastern Asia and long appreciated in ornamental gardens. Its two-ball form adds a touch of formal garden tradition, beautifully suited to Southern homes and cottage-inspired spaces.
How to Care for Your Blue Point 2-Ball Topiary
Sunlight: Place outdoors in full sun with good air circulation. Allow space around both foliage balls so light reaches them evenly.
Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots become established. Allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Check containers frequently during hot weather, and never leave the pot standing in collected water.
Soil & Drainage: Choose well-drained garden soil or a quality outdoor potting mix. Decorative planters must have drainage holes. Junipers do not tolerate consistently soggy roots.
Pruning: Lightly trim new green growth in spring and early summer to maintain both rounded tiers. Remove unwanted shoots along the exposed trunk and between the balls. Avoid cutting into bare, older wood, which generally does not fill back in readily.
Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid heavy feeding that encourages excessive growth.
Container Care: Repot as roots fill the container. Regular trimming maintains the shape, while sufficient root space supports a healthy plant. Protect container roots during unusually severe freezes.
Mulching: For landscape planting, mulch around the root zone while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.
Pet Safety & Handling
Blue Point Juniper should not be considered confirmed pet-safe. Junipers other than common juniper are listed as potentially harmful if eaten and may cause skin irritation. Information specific to Blue Point exposure in cats and dogs is limited.
Keep pets from chewing the foliage, stems, or berry-like cones, and remove pruning clippings promptly. If your pet ingests any part of the plant or develops symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Wear gloves when pruning if you have sensitive skin.
Beautiful Garden Companions
Pair with white snapdragons for cool-season charm, low-growing abelia for contrasting foliage, or ornamental grasses for gentle movement. Leave room around the trunk and lower foliage ball for airflow and easy trimming.
Each topiary is naturally unique. Overall height, ball diameter, spacing, and fullness will vary. The #5 designation refers to the nursery container class, not the plant’s height.
Thoughtfully shaped, beautifully green, and ready to welcome you home—from Wright’s Market.
