Plant History & Garden Charm
Blue Point is a cultivar of Chinese juniper, a species native to eastern Asia and long appreciated in ornamental landscapes. Its balanced silhouette adds structure to traditional Southern gardens, while its cool foliage color complements relaxed cottage-style plantings.
How to Care for Your Blue Point Juniper
Sunlight: Plant outdoors in full sun with good air circulation. Plenty of light encourages dense foliage and helps preserve its attractive shape.
Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots become established. Check moisture in both the original root ball and surrounding soil; allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Avoid standing water and consistently soggy roots.
Soil & Drainage: Choose well-drained garden soil. Avoid low spots that collect water, and plant with the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding soil level.
Pruning: Little pruning is needed to maintain its natural pyramidal form. Lightly trim wayward green growth in spring or early summer if necessary. Avoid cutting into bare, older wood, which generally does not fill back in readily.
Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid excessive feeding.
Mulching: Apply a light layer of mulch around the root zone, keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
Spacing: Plan for its mature width of approximately 6–8 feet. Leave adequate room between plants, buildings, and walkways to support healthy growth and airflow.
Pet Safety & Handling
Blue Point Juniper should not be considered confirmed pet-safe. Junipers other than common juniper are listed as potentially harmful if eaten and may cause skin irritation. Information specific to Blue Point exposure in cats and dogs is limited.
Keep pets from chewing foliage, stems, or berry-like cones, and remove pruning clippings promptly. If your pet ingests the plant or develops symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Wear gloves when pruning if you have sensitive skin.
Beautiful Garden Companions
Pair with dwarf abelia, drift roses, salvia, or ornamental grasses in sunny, well-drained beds. White snapdragons add charming cool-season color against its blue-green foliage. Allow each plant room to reach its mature size.
Each plant is naturally unique. Height, width, and fullness will vary. The 15-gallon designation refers to the nursery container size, not the plant’s height.
Lasting beauty and a heartfelt welcome—from Wright’s Market.
