Plant History & Garden Charm

Blue Pacific is a selection of shore juniper, a species native to coastal areas of Japan and nearby regions. Its naturally trailing habit and tolerance of sandy conditions make it especially appealing for coastal-inspired landscapes. The cool blue-green foliage brings a peaceful contrast to flowering borders and traditional Southern gardens.

How to Care for Your Blue Pacific Juniper

Sunlight: Plant outdoors in full sun for dense growth and attractive foliage. Choose an open location with good air circulation.

Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly while roots establish. Allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Once established, provide supplemental water during extended dry periods. Avoid constantly wet soil.

Soil & Drainage: Excellent drainage is essential. Blue Pacific grows well in sandy or other well-drained soils. Avoid low areas that collect water.

Pruning: Allow its branches to spread naturally. Lightly shorten wayward growth as needed, keeping cuts within green foliage. Avoid cutting into bare, older wood, which generally does not fill back in readily.

Fertilizing: If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer labeled for evergreen shrubs in spring, following package directions. Avoid excessive feeding.

Mulching & Weeding: Keep weeds under control while plants fill in. Apply mulch lightly between plants, keeping it away from their crowns and avoiding buildup over the trailing branches.

Spacing: Allow for a mature spread of approximately 5–6 feet. Keep spreading branches clear of walkways; this groundcover does not tolerate regular foot traffic.

Pet Safety & Handling

Blue Pacific Juniper should not be considered confirmed pet-safe. Junipers other than common juniper are listed as potentially harmful if eaten and may cause skin irritation. Information specific to this cultivar in cats and dogs is limited.

Keep pets from chewing foliage, stems, or berry-like cones, and remove pruning clippings promptly. If your pet ingests the plant or develops symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Wear gloves when handling prickly foliage or pruning.

Beautiful Garden Companions

Pair with drift roses, salvia, dwarf abelia, or ornamental grasses in sunny, well-drained beds. Its blue-green foliage also creates a lovely low layer near upright evergreens. Give each plant room to mature without crowding.

Each plant is naturally unique. Height, spread, and fullness will vary. The 3-gallon designation refers to the nursery container size.

Coastal charm, lasting greenery, and a warm welcome—from Wright’s Market.
