Viburnum Coppertop™
A Southern Statement of Strength and Beauty
Here at Wright’s Market, nestled inside our beloved 1938 cottage where porches are for storytelling and kindness grows as naturally as tomatoes in June, we believe in plants that offer both presence and purpose. Viburnum Coppertop™ is one of those true Southern treasures—handsome, hearty, and always dependable. With its glossy evergreen leaves and striking copper-bronze new growth, Coppertop doesn’t just grow—it makes a statement, season after season.
A Glimpse into History:
The Viburnum family has deep roots—cultivated for centuries across Asia, Europe, and North America. Known for their beauty and adaptability, Viburnums have long found a place in Southern landscapes, offering evergreen reliability and generous blooms.
Coppertop™ Viburnum (Viburnum odoratissimum 'Coppertop') is a modern cultivar bred for both color and performance. It takes everything we love about traditional sweet viburnum and adds a fiery twist—with vibrant, copper-toned new leaves that age to deep green, creating a show-stopping backdrop in any garden setting.
Where It Grows Best:
Coppertop thrives in USDA zones 8–10, making it a perfect match for our Southern climate. It loves full sun to partial shade, grows well in well-drained, moderately fertile soil, and handles heat and humidity with Southern-style grace.
This shrub reaches a mature height of 6 to 10 feet and spreads about 5 to 6 feet, making it ideal for:
-
Privacy screens
-
Foundation plantings
-
Large containers
-
Anchoring garden beds with bold, evergreen structure
What It Means:
In the garden, Coppertop™ symbolizes strength with warmth, much like the family members and neighbors who shape our lives with both backbone and heart. Its bold stature and colorful growth remind us that you can be both strong and beautiful, vibrant and grounded—all at the same time.
It’s a plant that holds space—reliably, gracefully, and with a little Southern flair.
Blooming Season:
In spring to early summer, Coppertop™ bursts into clusters of creamy-white, fragrant flowers that draw in butterflies, bees, and admiring glances alike. These blooms are followed by small red berries that ripen to black, providing seasonal interest and a treat for visiting birds.
But even when it's not in flower, that copper-colored new growth steals the show—especially in spring and early summer—offering a pop of color against its deep green backdrop.
Care Instructions:
Low-maintenance and ready to grow with you, Coppertop™ doesn’t ask for much:
-
Light: Full sun to part shade (more sun encourages stronger copper tones)
-
Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil
-
Water: Moderate watering; drought-tolerant once established
-
Pruning: Minimal—shape lightly in late winter or after blooming if needed
-
Fertilizer: Feed in early spring for best growth
Coppertop™ is deer-resistant, heat-tolerant, and evergreen, making it a worry-free favorite for busy gardeners or those planting with the future in mind.
Complimentary Plant Material:
Pair Coppertop™ with:
-
Loropetalum ‘Cerise Charm’ for bold color contrast
-
Miscanthus ‘Adagio’ or Carex ‘Everest’ for soft, flowing texture nearby
-
Boxwood or Dwarf Yaupon Holly for evergreen structure
-

It also stands beautifully on its own as a focal point in cottage borders or at the corner of the house, where it greets guests with both polish and personality.
A Plant with Backbone and Beauty
Just like the best stories passed down on porches and the folks who carry on family traditions with love and strength, Viburnum Coppertop™ stands tall in every sense. It’s beautiful without being boastful, strong without being stubborn, and as dependable as the changing seasons.
Around here at Wright’s Market, we think that’s the very definition of Southern charm
